High School Matters
Homework starts to get harder, there are upperclassmen passing by, and not knowing where the classrooms are- may make high school sound scary. There are many extracurricular activities people can be involved in, which can get overwhelming at times. High school seemed to be easy my freshman and sophomore years, but during my junior and senior years, I have had to put in more effort to earn good grades, and I have learned to do this by not procrastinating, asking questions, and learning from other students.
When I first started high school, I thought that freshman year was really easy. In elementary school and in middle school, I got all A’s and to me that was a good grade. When I got to high school, I quickly realized I didn't have to work hard to keep my grades up. I thought high school was going to be this easy for all four years. I didn't care when or how I got my work done, as long as I got a good grade. I would procrastinate and wait to do my homework until the day it was due. There were even times when I just did not do my homework at all. I didn't think that studying for tests was necessary in order to do well. I hated reading so I wouldn’t read books for the Accelerated Reader points (AR points). Even with this, I was still getting A’s on all my assignments.
When my junior year and senior year started, my classes became harder and the homework definitely got harder as well. During junior year, I was taking several college level classes, but I was not taking them for dual credit. The first midterm came and my grades were not what I thought they would be. I had gotten B’s and C’s and that is when I realized I needed to change the way I went about my school work.
I was not sure how I was going to get my grades up or what exactly I needed to change. My parents tried to help with my homework but they did not know how. I then started staying after school and asking teachers for help. During class time, I was asking my classmates to help me and give me tips on how to study for the test. After I put in the work to get my grades up it all paid off; my grades started improving. I knew that if I wanted to keep the good grades I would have to keep putting in the time and effort.
I thought high school was easy at first, but I quickly realized that I couldn't procrastinate, I had to ask questions, and my classmates and teachers were willing to help me. The homework may have gotten harder junior year and senior year, but I knew that it was time to step it up and get control of my life. I now know that I have to put more effort into my assignments and homework and manage my time more wisely.
